Hidden places in Wayanad - part 1
Uravu Indigenous Science and Technology Study Centre Wayanad houses the largest bamboo nursery in south India in terms of species variety. They also have manufacturing units and a workshop where the local community creates stunning handcrafted products from bamboo. And they have been on a mission to replace plastic, iron and wood with bamboo as a sustainable solution to climate change. It is run by a group of people from diverse backgrounds, including scientists, activists, organic farmers and artisans. As a visitor, you can sign up for a tour & hands-on bamboo craft workshop. The 2+ hour session began with an insightful tour of their nursery & manufacturing unit, where we were explained in detail about the immense potential of bamboo. You can even purchase a variety of handcrafted bamboo accessories here - from bamboo speakers to musical instruments, decorative lights, pens, baskets, spice boxes window blinds, bamboo furniture & so much more. We decided to buy some earrings, a bookmark, a packet of bamboo rice, bamboo rice laddoos and bamboo shoot powder (podi), which turned out to be delicious! At the end, we went for the hands-on workshop where we learnt to create a bamboo bangle featuring a stunning geometrical design. The work was quite intricate but eventually, we were able to finish the creation in about 40 minutes — a feat we were so proud of! The visit showed us how we can incorporate bamboo in our daily lives in so many ways for a more eco-friendly way of living.
