My love affair with Burma Burma began in 2021. It was the first time I had visited the restaurant during my trip to Mumbai. Since then, I have been to their Bangalore outlet and recently, dined at their newest restaurant in Hyderabad a couple of times.
Nothing much has changed. I was surprised by how they have managed to maintain their exemplary quality in every aspect — right from the delicate flavors of Burmese cuisine to the vibrant ambience.
Among India’s best restaurants, Burma Burma can transport you to the heartland of Myanmar — from the Kyan tribes to the Kanchin region. Yet, they bring a fresh and innovative take to every dish, fully appeasing the epicureans. And their celebration of Burma goes beyond the food, reflecting across their interiors.
In this article, I am going to take you through the finer details of why Burma Burma has stood the test of time to remain among the top. I’ll also share my favorite things about the restaurant and the must-try dishes. Let’s begin?

The Best Parts About Burma Burma

# Complex Flavors
When it comes to flavors, Burma Burma is a class apart from your average fine dining restaurants. Their creations, carefully developed by chef Ansab Khan and his team, are beautifully layered, with hidden undertones that create a dance on the palate. The complexity of the flavors linger romantically on your tastebuds for quite some time.
Some of their dishes, with pleasant flavor surprises, have managed to stump me & leave me speechless. This has happened very few times in my last 10 years of critiquing restaurants as a lifestyle journalist & vegan food blogger.
# Inclusive Menu
Burma Burma’s food menu is one of the most inclusive ones I have ever seen. They have separate menus to indicate Jain, vegan and gluten-free dishes, with enough options to choose from in each category.
Also, despite being 100% vegetarian, they have dishes like mock chicken and mock duck to cater to the non vegetarian food lovers.

# Flawless Service
Their service has always been quick and warm on all our 5 visits. With a good number of serving staff who were always ready to help out, every table was paid attention to and everyone’s questions were answered promptly.
But, the highlight for me was that all staff members were well-trained regarding various dietary preferences. They didn’t end up with a blank face when I enquired about vegan dishes, unlike many other restaurants. They knew exactly what I was asking about.
# Theatrical Live Dessert Bar
Burma Burma has a live dessert counter in their Hyderabad outlet, which is a visual treat! It basically looks like an episode of MasterChef India playing out right in front of you, as their pastry chefs swiftly put together each element of the desserts artistically.

The Ambience & Interiors Of Burma Burma
The ambience of all Burma Burma restaurants is vibrant & lively. They showcase unique Burmese dolls and decor pieces, representing the country and its culture beautifully. The restaurant manages to make you feel like you have entered a miniature version of Myanmar.
In the Hyderabad outlet, colorful replicas of Pagodas (Burmese Buddhist temples) hang from the ceiling. The vibrance extends to the furniture, with bright hues of blue, green, yellow & red neatly juxtaposed with muted shades.

Must-Try Food & Drinks At Burma Burma
Burma Burma serves a large variety of Burmese noodle-based and rice-based main courses, appetizers, soups, salads and desserts. For drinks, they offer bubble teas, mocktails inspired by Burmese flavors, and soothing herbal teas.
Here are the best dishes we tried in the restaurant, across various cities:
# Grilled Sticky Rice with Bbq Jackfruit Filling
I am not sure if I was more impressed with the main dish or the accompanying sauce. As a Bengali living in Hyderabad who is almost maniacal about the Gondhoraj Lebu, the fragrant Kaffir Lime-based sauce touched the deeper corners of my soul with its similar flavor profile.
But at the same time, I have been a sushi fanatic as well. So when I found a dish that could be called a southern Burmese version of Japanese sushi, I was thrilled to bits.
Their interpretation had a layer of succulent barbecued jackfruit chunks stuffed inside a sticky rice cylinder. It was wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled. Though the leaf wrapper had to be removed before eating, its flavors had gotten subtly infused into the rice. Altogether, the dish was nothing short of heavenly.

TWT Tip: If you’re not into jackfruit, you can also try other filling options such as curried mushrooms broccoli-asparagus.
# Kaffir Lime Cooler
By the time I finished the above dish, I had asked the manager so many questions about the kaffir lime sauce, that he identified my overzealousness about it and announced that they had a Kaffir Lime Cooler as well. 😂
Next thing I knew was I had to order it. The drink turned out to be very refreshing, yet not overly sweet like the usual mocktails. Plus, it had a surprise element of black grass jelly squares that added an interesting twist to every sip.
# Burma Burma Tea Blend

This was another major highlight of our meal. Firstly, the tea was theatrically-made right on our table in a fancy transparent teapot. It was served with some crunchy and delicious cookies.
And when we took the first sip of the tea, it was a pleasant surprise on the palate, with subtle hidden undertones of peach and orange. The brilliantly-layered white tea is surely a must-try.
# Sun Dried Bamboo & Noodle Soup
Originated from the Kayin region of Burma, this dish called Tar La Baw is created with fermented, sun-dried bamboo broth infused with pounded ginger and basil. Plus, it’s served with fine and delicate rice vermicelli noodles, slow-roasted tomato and red pumpkin, creating a very distinct flavor and bite.
# Highway Meal Parcel

A quirky yet gourmet twist to a traveler’s meal from Yangon region, the dish was actually served on food grade paper featuring Burmese text. It mirrored the traditional way of serving food on a newspaper — an age-old practice in several parts of Asia.
# Burma Burma “Oh No Khowseuy”
An obvious choice during my first visit to the restaurant, this is their signature dish made with a delectable coconut-based soup infused with the heavenly aroma of lemongrass. It is a must-try if you are visiting for the first time. You can choose between hakka, udon, whole wheat & rice noodles.
# Hand Cut Noodles Salad

One of the best salads I’ve had, the steamed rice noodle dish from Kokang region was elevated because of its zesty garlic flavor. It had a generous sprinkle of crisp garlic chunks, teamed with fresh herbs and chillies.
# Mandalay Noodle Bowl
Soothing & hearty would be an understatement for this soupy, coconuty noodle bowl. Mildly spiced & topped with silky tofu & crunchy shitake mushroom fingers, the wholesome bowl was lip-smacking and super filling. It was served with crunchy accompaniments, such as fried onions, fried garlic chunks, diced spring onions, roasted peanuts, chillies, etc., which you can add to the soup as per your taste.
# Stir Fry Tofu, Roselle & Mushroom

A comforting dish with melt-in-mouth tofu and soft mushrooms, it was cooked in a beautiful yellow turmeric-based sauce and tangy roselle (gongura) leaves. Paired with steamed rice, this one reminded me of home.
# Fried Rice with Tea Leaf
Now this is an ode to Burma’s love for tea leaves, which I was quite hesitant to try initially. But it turned out to be delectable with a unique punch.
# Split Gill Mushroom Fried Rice

If you’re a fan of umami flavors, you shouldn’t miss this wok-tossed fried rice. It’s infused with soy sauce and roasted mushroom extracts, plus has generous chunks of foraged split gill mushrooms making for meaty bites.
# Banana Flower Croquettes with Kokum Creme
While banana flower salad is a staple in several parts of Burma, this one felt like a sophisticated version of the famous Bengali snack — Mochar Chop. Subtly spiced, yet wholesome in flavors, the crisp croquettes were served with a delicious pink dip made of coconut cream & kokum.
# Corn & Shiitake Soup

I know sweet corn soup is commonly found in most restaurants. But this one created at Burma Burma is unlike any other corn soup we have had. Its flavors were more nuanced, with strong layers of mushrooms and herbs. Plus, the fact that the corn husk was slow-cooked accentuated its taste to another level.
# Apple & Hazelnut Crumble
Firstly, seeing a vegan cake on their menu itself made me silently thank them from the bottom of my heart. Then the taste & texture were the icing on the cake — moist hazelnut sponge topped with caramelized vanilla apples, apple sauce, cocoa crumble & the most delicious dark chocolate mousse. I found it heavenly.

TWT Experience Summary Of Burma Burma
If you ever want to try authentic Burmese cuisine within India or enjoy complex flavors, Burma Burma is a must-visit. It is one of those few restaurants, where I didn’t find a single dish that I could criticize.
Everything from their coconut-based Burmese dishes, to the inclusive menu, authentic decor and impeccable service, make it one of my favorite restaurants in India. And I am the biggest fan of their Grilled Sticky Rice wrapped in Banana Leaf with BBQ jackfruit filling, Burma Burma Tea Blend, Corn & Shiitake Soup, Mandalay Noodle Bowl and Apple Hazelnut Crumble.
