Kashmir in winter is a vision in white. Covered in neverending stretches of snow, the verdant valleys of Kashmir look like a still from a postcard. Owing to its frozen lakes, icy glaciers and snow-clad meadows, Kashmir in December, January and February is often compared to the scenic terrains of Switzerland.

With most parts of the country experiencing a tropical climate, watching snowfall destinations in India is a special attraction for both local and international tourists. So, if you’re longing to experience the breathtaking beauty of Kashmir this season, here’s a list of 17 stunning places to visit in Kashmir in winter.

1. Gulmarg

kashmir winter places

Gulmarg is one of the best places to experience snowfall in India. Located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, this is one of India’s favorite skiing hotspots. While Gulmarg attracts tourists all over the year, it is a stunning sight to behold during the winter.

The place also offers great trekking opportunities. However, the biggest attraction in Gulmarg is the Gondola Ride (cable car). The aerial view of Gulmarg in December from the gondolas is absolutely surreal! There are 2 Phases of the rides – phase 1 takes you from Gulmarg to Kongdori where you get to see stunning views of meadows and forests. This path can also be covered on foot and takes about an hour through meadows and pine forests.

But having experienced Phase 2, I can assure it is the real steal deal. It takes you from Kongdori right up to the Apharwat Peak that stands at an altitude of 13,500 ft. and on the way, you get to see sweeping views of the Nanda Devi Peak and Pir Panjal Range completely cloaked in snow.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the frozen Alpather Lake and the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary for an up-close experience of wildlife in their natural habitat.

Note: Book your Gondola ride well in advance to avoid waiting in long queues.

TWT Trivia: Kashmir has a number of places that end with the word ‘marg’, which means meadow in Persian. These include Gulmarg (meadow of flowers), Sonamarg (meadow of gold), Yusmarg (meadow of Jesus), Tangmarg (meadow of pear) and others.

2. Sonamarg

kashmir winter places

Also known as Sonmarg, this Himalayan hill station of unmelting snow will surely take your breath away. If you’re a ski enthusiast and don’t mind temperatures in the minus, then head to the Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg for some thrilling adventures in the fresh snow. If the weather conditions are favorable, you can also visit the Zero Point located about 25 km away.

Sonmarg in December can get quite chilly. So, in case you run out of sufficient warm clothes, there are many places where you can rent/buy coats and snow boots to help you trek in the snow with ease. You can also wear a Phiran/Pheeran, the traditional winter garment worn by Kashmiris and blend in with the locals. I recall renting one myself while ecstatically trekking up and sledding down the glacier during my own trip.

Did You Know?

Traditionally, the people of Kashmir used the Kangri, an earthenware wrapped within a wicker basket and filled with hot coal, to keep themselves warm in the winters.

3. Srinagar

kashmir winter places

Srinagar’s snow-clad landscape is a must-visit this season. If you are visiting Kashmir during the Chillai Kalan (period of extreme cold beginning from December 21 and spanning till January end), you may even get to witness the famous Dal Lake frozen, making for a memorable sight.

If the Srikara service is still on, take a quick trip to the Char Chinar island. Don’t forget to visit the floating market where you can find various local garments and handicrafts. Make sure to also visit the famous Floating Post Office of Srinagar.

However, the beauty of Srinagar is best enjoyed from a houseboat. Right from their wooden interiors adorned with handwoven Kashmiri carpets to savoring traditional dishes, this makes for an unforgettable experience. If you find the Dal lake too crowded, head over to a houseboat in the adjacent Nigeen Lake.

You can also opt to stay in the JKTDC Government huts nestled amidst pine forests. They are located at close proximity to the popular tourist spots of Chasme Shahi and Pari Mahal.

While you may not be able to enjoy the summer bloom, the Mughal gardens exude a dream-like-charm during the winters. Sprinkled with a delicate layer of snow, the Shalimar and Nishat Bagh are a must-visit during your Kashmir trip in December.

Another popular place to visit in Srinagar in winter is the Shankaracharya Temple. Trekking on the solemn, snow-draped trail to the top of the Shankaracharya Hill, makes for a pilgrim tour you will never forget.

TWT Trivia: For another exciting adventure, hop on to the new glass-covered Vistadome coach in the Budgam-Banihal special train to enjoy breathtaking views of Srinagar’s snow-clad mountains on the move.

4. Doodhpathri

kashmir winter places

Located about 43 km from Srinagar, the quaint, offbeat hill station of Doodhpathri beckons tourists for its calm, relaxing scenarios. This hidden gem makes for a perfect place to unwind amidst pristine nature.

Most tourists opt for ATV rides to its 5-6 tourist points located about a km away from each. Amongst these, the main attractions in Doodhpathri are the Shali Ganga River, Palmaidan and the beautiful Dikshal meadow, overlooking the Ashtaar Glacier. However, check with the locals before planning a trip to Doodhpathri, as the place becomes inaccessible during periods of heavy snowfall.

5. Awantipora Ruins

The Avanti Swami Temple Ruins on the banks of River Jhelum, about 31 km from Srinagar, is a perfect example of ancient Indian stone architecture. This beautiful temple complex was built under the patronage of King Avantivarman (853-855 century), who was also the founder of Avantipur.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple showcases many intricately carved sculptures, an imposing entrance, and 4 small shrines. If you are taking the inner route from Srinagar to Pahalgam, the Avantipur Temple Ruins is a good place to stopover and familiarize yourself with the country’s glorious history.

The turbulent waters of River Lider meandering through the pine-cloaked mountains is a view that puts the most tormented minds at peace. Pahalgam is a fascinating destination in Kashmir that is usually packed with tourists. However, this is where a trip to Kashmir in December puts you at an advantage. Pahalgam in winter transforms into a tranquil retreat where you can spend hours in self reflection.

Its vast stretches of pine and deodar forests, speckled with fresh snow looks like a winter wonderland all decked up for Christmas. Instead of Srinagar, it is better to stay at Pahalgam, which will make traveling to some of the most popular tourist destinations in Kashmir such as Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Chandanwari quite convenient.

Also if time permits, take a detour from your planned itinerary and visit the Kokernag Botanical Garden (about 62 km), which has a crystal clear stream flowing through it and offers an immersive experience amidst unspoiled nature.

TWT Tip: If you are traveling from Srinagar to Pahalgam, stop by at Pampore to buy some Mamra Badam (nut) and Kashmiri Kesar, one of the finest in the country.

7. Chandanwadi

The journey to the sacred pilgrimage site of Amarnath begins from Chandanwadi. Though the trek is not possible during the winter season, Chandanwadi is a must-visit during your Kashmir tour in December if you want to enjoy snowfall in India.

It is considered one of the most beautiful places in Kashmir that can serve as a perfect backdrop for Instagrammable photos. There are also a couple of small tea and snacks stalls where you can grab a steaming bowl of maggi. Located about 16 km from Pahalgam, Chandanwadi  can be covered in a day’s trip along with Aru and Betaab Valley.

However, during the winters, do watch out for avalanches and have a local guide accompany you at all times.
