1. Kerala
Commonly referred to as God’s Own Country, Kerala allows you to have an immersive experience with nature and wildlife. The lush green natural beauty of Kerala, with its expansive lands of coconut trees, is soothing, almost motherly. This makes Kerala the best place for holistic healing of your body and mind.
Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)
The capital of Kerala is famous for its beautiful beaches, with Kovalam, Varkala, and Shanghumugham Beach being the most popular among them. Near the Kovalam beach you can also find many food and shopping zones, Ayurvedic massage and lodging options in beach cottages. The Varkala and the Shanghumugham Beaches are more suited for a quite time by the shore. There is also a 2000 year old Janardhanaswamy Vishnu Temple located quite close to the Varkala beach.
The city is also known for the Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of the most revered Hindu temples where Lord Vishnu rests on Adi Shesha (a giant serpent) in the Anantha Sayana pose (supine posture), attended by Goddess Lakshmi and with a lotus stem emerging from his belly, which serves as a seat for Lord Brahma.
The temple has a noteworthy architecture that blends in the Dravidian and Cheran styles, and features a mesmerizing golden gopuram (dome).
Note: The temple follows a strict dress code — sarees for women and veshti for men. You can rent a veshti from the numerous stalls near the temple.
Did You Know?
This centuries-old temple is said to have 6 hidden chambers as per news reports. During a recent excavation attempt from the government, ancient gold, diamond and gems-studded jewelries were discovered. However, the 2nd chamber remained shut despite various efforts and use of modern technology. It is believed that the chamber is closed with ancient spells and has supernatural beings guarding its entrance. Any attempt to open it may spell disaster over the state of Kerala as per local folklore.
Munnar
The hill-station of Munnar is my favorite and one of the most heavenly places in Kerala. Its undulating hills, carpeted with lush green tea plantations, is also home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat), making it an ideal place for trekkers.
Thekkady
At the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, you can observe wild animals in their natural habitat. The reserve organizes various activities for visitors, with the treks in the jungle and boating at Periyar Lake being the most popular ones. What’s more is that you can spend the night amidst wildlife by booking a stay at one of their accommodations. For more details, visit Periyar Tiger Reserve’s official website.
Wayanad
Wayanad, nestled amidst the magical flora and fauna of Kerala, has some of the most popular tourist attractions of the state. This includes the prehistoric Edakkal Caves known for its stone-age carvings, Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar Dam, and a number of gorgeous waterfalls.
Alleppey or Alappuzha
Boating in the backwaters of Alleppey is quite reminiscent of Venice. Apart from Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), this is another tourist destination in India that offers a luxurious stay in houseboats.
TWT Tip: Kerala is famous for its ancient Ayurvedic healing practices. While most major resorts provide Ayurvedic spas, you can also get your doshas analyzed and receive a customized Ayurvedic treatment at government recognized centers. 6. Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Home to the Jarawa Tribe, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the best places to experience the wonders of marine life. The islands are famous for water activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, sea karting, and fishing.
Havelock: You can also enjoy a luxurious cruise experience while traveling from Port Blair to Havelock. The resort we stayed in had a private beach access and was quite close to a mangrove forest. However, the best experience lies in kayaking through the dense mangrove forests in Havelock, where you can view different varieties of birds and wildlife up close.
Baratang Island: The real adventure, though, was during our trip to Baratang Island. To reach the island, you need to travel from Port Blair to the Jirakatang Check Post and then reach Middle Strait Jetty through the Jarawa Reserve Forest. Then a ferry takes you to Baratang Island.
The journey was absolutely beautiful with dense rainforests on either side. We also came across a few Jarawa women and children standing at a few points.
The rules here are quite strict for the safety of travelers and the tribals. Cars are not allowed to overtake or halt for photography or any interaction with the tribals.
The main attraction at the Baratang Island are mud volcanoes. However, to reach this geological wonder, you need to journey on foot through a dense rainforest.
When we reached the island, it had started to rain. However, to my utter surprise, the tree cover was so dense that we could only hear the pitter patter sound of rain, but did not get drenched. The large canopies completely blocked the rain and kept us dry.

9. Kolkata
Kolkata served as the former capital of British India. This is one of the reasons the city is well planned for all weather conditions and is home to beautiful colonial buildings. It is also the only place in India where you can still experience a tram ride.
If you don’t mind a bit of crowd, Kolkata is best visited during Durga Puja. And I guarantee that you’d have never witnessed a city celebrate a festival in such grandeur. After meticulous research, artists recreate famous monuments around the world that serve as pandals for Goddess Durga. The entire city reverberates on the rhythm of the dhak (membranophone musical instrument), and the mouthwatering spread of Bengali cuisine. The vibe is almost infectious.
Other major festivals include the Kali Puja during Diwali and Saraswati Puja, usually observed in January or February, depending on the Bengali calendar for the respective year.
Some of the most iconic places to visit in the city are Victoria Memorial Hall, Dakshineswar Kali Mandir, Kalighat, Rabindra Sadan, Howrah Bridge, Jorasanko Thakurbari (Rabindranath Tagore’s house) and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The Academy Of Fine Arts is the best place for viewing Bengali Theatre and cultural dance and music shows. You can also visit the vibrant markets of Gariahat and New Market for shopping.

Oxford Bookstore at Park Street, Birla Temple, Science City, South Park Street Cemetery, Princep Ghat, Jain Shwetambar Dadajika Temple and Eco Tourism Park are the other popular tourist destinations in Kolkata.

10. Himachal Pradesh
The majestic Himalayan mountains envelop the state of Himachal Pradesh and leave you in complete awe of the flora, fauna and simple lifestyle of the people. Himachal has some of the most beautiful hill stations that are still preserved in its pristine form. Below is a short list of my personal favorites.
Kullu, Manali, & Shimla
Many travel companies offer these 3 Himalayan places in India as a tour package. The gorgeous valley of Kullu, with the Beas River meandering through it, surrounded by Pine and Deodar forest-carpeted mountains, is a vision by itself. I remember bringing back lots of apples from one of its orchards.
Manali offers you a spectacular view of the Himalayan Pir-Panjal Range and the Dhauladhar Mountain Ranges. Further, Manali’s Solang Valley is perfect for skiing and other snow sports.
The lively town of Shimla has some beautiful tourist spots that make for a great local sightseeing tour coupled with vibrant market scenes. Some of these are the Viceregal Lodge (museum), Shri Hanuman Mandir, Kali Bari Temple, Himachal State Museum, Mall Road, Christ Church, Gorton Castle, Jakhu Temple, and The Ridge.
Hidimba Devi Temple
About 4 hours from the Kullu district, in the village of Dungri, lies the famous Hidimba Devi Temple dedicated to Hidimbi/Hidimba Devi, wife of Bhima. This pagoda-styled temple, built of stone and wood, dates back to 1553. The temple is surrounded by giant Deodar trees which are a part of the Dungri Van Vihar (Forest Park). With cinematic views, a trek up this forest park is truly mesmerizing.
Jagatsukh Village
Embark on a trekking trail to the picturesque mountain village of Jagatsukh located about 7 km from Manali. The village has gained popularity amongst travelers for its scenic landscapes, the famous Shiva Temple, nearby hot springs and the Chachauhali Mela (an annual cultural fair).
Rohtang Pass
Locally known as the Rohtang La, this mountain pass connects the Kullu valley with Lahaul and Spiti valleys and is also known as the Gateway to Ladakh.
About 16 years ago, when I was visiting the Rohtang Pass, there was a landslide. So we had to stop for a while before the pass. However, when we got down from our car, despite the biting cold, the scenic beauty that surrounded us was epic.
Snow clad mountains all around us, rugged cliffs on one side and a steep slope on the other side. You will also come across a number of waterfalls on your way to Rohtang Pass from Manali.
Note: The Rohtang Pass is only open from May 15 to November and becomes inaccessible after that, due to heavy snowfall in this area. You will need to book a permit in advance through the Rohtang Pass permit website to visit the place and go beyond it.
The permits are checked at the Gulaba Checkpost and you can expect a minor traffic jam here. Only 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles are allowed each day. So it is advisable to book the pass ahead of your journey.
TWT Tip: Landslides are quite common in Himachal Pradesh. It is advisable to avoid rainy seasons and check the local news before heading to a place. Also, it’s better to hire local drivers rather than drive yourself, as the roads are often slippery and there are many hairpin bends.
Other Tourist Destinations In Himachal Pradesh
A few other travel hotspots in Himachal Pradesh include Naggar, Dharamshala, Kasauli, Kangra Valley (which is known for the famous Masroor Rock Cut Temple, a UNESCO world heritage site), Dalhousie, Shangarh and Solang Valley.
Best Time To Visit Himachal Pradesh
You can travel to Himachal Pradesh anytime between March-June. For snowfall sightings, visit between November end and February.

You can take a flight to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh, Pathankot Airport or the Bhuntar Airport (Kullu Airport) and then book a car to Himachal Pradesh. The closest major railway station is Pathankot Railway Station from where you can take another train to Jogindernagar.
Minimum Number Of Days Required For A Quick Tour Of Himachal Pradesh
You will need about 7-10 days to explore Himachal Pradesh.
11. Uttarakhand
Being one of the top tourist places in India, Uttarakhand gives you a chance to witness mother nature in her raw, rugged form. Bare snow-capped Himalayan ranges majestically stand guarding the state’s natural beauty. The biting cold, stunning waterfalls, and raging rivers make Uttarakhand a unique spectacle showcasing the more austere side of nature’s beauty.
Char Dham Yatra
Thousands of pilgrims travel to Uttarakhand to visit the Char Dham (four Hindu pilgrimage sites) of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The tour begins from the sacred city of Haridwar, where you take a dip in the Ganges, pray at the temples, observe the Ganga aarti in the evening and float diyas (lamps) on the Ganga river.
The temple of Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the Pancha (five) Kedar shrines that are situated in Uttarakhand. The other 4 temples are Madhmaheshwar, Kalpnath, Tungnath, and Rudranath. The Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Gangotri Temple to Goddess Ganga, and Yamunotri to Goddess Yamuna.
I was only 10 years old when we went on our Char Dham Yatra. We traveled via the old Kedar route where you first reached Gaurikund on a vehicle from Haridwar, and then trekked or went on horseback to Kedarnath via Rambara. However, the devastating flood in 2013 completely washed away Rambara along with the old route (Bollywood movie Kedarnath is based on this calamity). So if you are planning a trip to Kedarnath in 2023, you will be following the new route, which is via Linchauli.
Note: The Kedarnath temple remains closed from mid November to March due to heavy snowfall in the area. This year the temple will close on 16 November.
Pipalkoti
I recollect Pipalkoti as a quaint hill station where locals dried yellow corn on their rooftops. The guesthouse we stayed in had a Bakharwal dog guarding the premises and we ate spicy chicken curry with hot chapatis on their terrace under a starry sky.
Being only 35 km from Joshimath, Pipalkoti often serves as a stopover for tourists traveling to Badrinath. Lush green valleys and Himalayan ranges adorned with terrace plantations best describe the picturesque town of Pipalkoti.
Munsiyari
While Mussoorie is the more popular hill station in Uttarakhand, I found the view of the mountains from this less-populated hill town far more breathtaking. We stayed in a tent at Munsiyari, slept in a sleeping bag and woke up to the most mesmerizing view of the snow-capped Panchachuli peaks, painted crimson at the break of dawn. Our campsite was at an altitude where nothing blocked our view and in the afternoon you could see the clouds rising up and veiling the peaks.
During the day, we went down to the Goriganga river shore and spent a few hours before heading back to the tents. There are a number of good view points in Munsiyari, where you can get a clear view of the five peaks of the Panchachuli Range. There’s also a tribal museum, waterfalls and the Nanda Devi Temple.
Almora, Kausani, Nainital, Ranikhet
Located quite close to each other, you can plan stays in Almora, Kaushani and Nainital, and visit Ranikhet on the way. Kausani is famous for the splendid panoramic view it offers of the Panchachuli, Nanda Devi and Trishul Himalayan peaks.
We had a clear view of the Trishul peaks (a group of three peaks that appear as a trident) from the terrace of our hotel, which also gave us the opportunity to watch a mesmerizing sunrise.
The Mata Naina Devi Temple is a popular tourist destination at Nainital. You can also appreciate scenic views of the surrounding mountains while enjoying a boat ride in the Naini Lake.
Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary
Another must visit tourist destination during your Uttarakhand trip is the Wildlife Sanctuary of Binsar. Plan your stay within the sanctuary. The hotel we stayed in had conducted a guided birdwatching and wildlife viewing tour for us in the morning. However, avoid strolling around at night unless you want a surprise visit from the leopards that roam freely in the sanctuary.
Other Tourist Destinations In Uttarakhand
Some other popular hill stations of Uttarakhand include Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Jim Corbett National Park, Dehradun, Chopta, and Auli.
Best Time To Visit Uttarakhand
You can either visit Uttarakhand during the summer months of March, April and May or during the pre-winter time of September and October.
