There was a whiff of rain-kissed mud in the air, as we drove through the lush forests of Hampi on a cloudy monsoon afternoon. Brief spells of showers that week had made the weather perfect for our drive to Evolve Back’s Kamalapura Palace Hampi

As we entered the imposing stone entrance gate of one of south India’s most luxurious resorts, it felt like a time machine was transporting us back to a royal fortress of the 14th century. We were greeted ‘Namaskara’ (with folded hands) by a guard dressed in traditional attire. He let us into the expansive premises, with a petal shower on our car.

A cobbled stone boulevard, lined by thin strips of lily ponds and latticed lanterns, led us to the reception building. And there it lay at a distance — the magnificent peach-hued palace with multi-layered dome roofs!

We noticed that the boulevard overlooked verdant greenery on the left side and a row of stunning water villas on the right side. We were astounded by the sheer beauty and opulence of the landscape.

When we stepped out of our car, to our pleasant surprise, staff members dressed in their traditional beige-hued uniform welcomed us with garlands and applied teeka (vermilion) on our foreheads. We were offered rose-scented wet towels for instant refreshment, a sweet welcome drink created with coconut milk, and a plate of dates stuffed with dark chocolate.

The welcoming ceremony set the tone for our 3-day stay here, and gave us a sneak peek into the grandeur we were about to experience at this ultra-luxury resort in south India. Now come, let me take you on a virtual tour of Evolve Back Resort (Hampi), its world-class kitchen, lavish rooms, and spell-binding activities. Shall we begin?

6 Best Parts About Our Stay At Evolve Back Hampi

Evolve Back Hampi – Zenana room’s balcony

Honestly, for the first time I find it difficult to choose just 6 highlights of a stay. Because, Evolve Back creates too many special memories and experiences for you during your stay, making it the absolute best resort in Hampi and among the top luxury hotels in India.

Nevertheless, here are my top 6 favorite parts about this five star resort:

# 1. Grand scale Indo-Islamic architecture & design

hampi evolve back lotus ponds
Lily ponds at Hampi’s Evolve Back

This is the first thing you observe about the property — ornate archways, elaborate high ceilings, and exquisite fans that double up as chandeliers. Moreover, the entire palace is adorned with period lighting and mashals (traditional torch lamps) on the side walls. Fully-bloomed water lilies in whites, pinks, and purples adorn the many ponds spread across the property.

I learnt later that the design of the luxury hotel, built in 2016, has been inspired by the heritage palaces of Hampi, which you can visit during your sightseeing tours.

The main reception building houses a sprawling courtyard in the center, with a pond flanked by lush green lawns. This courtyard is surrounded by several guest rooms, an ancient games room, and the main restaurant and bar overlooking a pristine infinity pool. The pool carries asymmetrical rocks on its corners, which mimic the large boulders of Hampi.

Interestingly, the architect-chairman Mr. George Thomas Ramapuram has also intertwined contemporary and traditional elements here, as the infinity pool sits in the center of a pond, which overlooks a grandiose mantapa (pavilion). We’ll come back to this mantapa and what happens here a little later.

Meanwhile, as we were given a tour of the entire property, we realized there was another building that housed a souvenir shop, Vaidyashala (Ayurvedic spa), a reading lounge and another restaurant. This building was a tribute to Hampi’s Lotus Mahal

Each room of the palace hotel also featured striking architecture and design elements, but we’ll talk more about it in some time.

TWT Tip: If you’re wondering how you can commute from one building to another in such a vast area, no worries. They have several in-house buggies you can call for during any time of your stay.

# 2. Enthralling nature trail & birdwatching experience

If I had to pick one of the most memorable experiences from here, it would probably be the complementary nature walks the resort organizes.

Evolve Back Hampi’s nature walk activity

Early in the morning, their in-house naturalist, Mr. Abhijeet, leads us into the reserve forest that enwraps the resort. The entire group is given professional binoculars. Through its lenses, we get to witness some of the most exotic birds and their detailed features! It is a magical experience to spot the unique patterns, textures and colors on their wings, head and body, which you can otherwise never see with your naked eye.

Abhijeet anna also explains about the specialty of each bird and answers everyone’s questions patiently. He helps us identify birds such as bulbul, cuckoo, koel, gray francolin, greater coucal and laughing dove.

Towards the end of the walk, we hike up to a small cliff for another surprise element — a bird’s eye view of the entire vista! The resort almost looks like a distant kingdom from here.

TWT Tip: It’s crucial that you wear sturdy hiking shoes during the walk, as some parts also involve climbing on the rocks. Wearing light and earthy colors is also advised, to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

# 3. Insightful sightseeing experiences with storytelling

Sightseeing organized by Evolve Back Hampi

The resort organizes paid sightseeing trips in their open Gypsies for interested guests. A local tour guide is also sent to accompany you, which truly helps in soaking in the spirit of the land, as they call it.

I say this because without a tour guide, you can still appreciate Hampi’s ancient structures and natural landscapes. However, the historical stories narrated by our guide Mr. Mallesh made the tour a lot more insightful. He offered a deeper understanding of Hampi’s glorious past and shot some beautiful pictures for us, which was an additional perk.

You can choose one or all of their trails, which include ruins of the royal city, Vijaya Vittala Temple, Virupaksha Temple, Lotus Mahal, Tungabhadra trek, coracle ride, etc. If you’re staying for more than 3 days, Evolve Back Hampi’s staff can also help you plan your itinerary after consulting with the historian.

Price of sightseeing per day: INR 5,500 for a family (inclusive of guide, vehicle and entry charges)

# 4. Experiential dining at their gorgeous spaces with a touch of culture

Evolve back hampi mantapa dining

Dining at Evolve Back Resort Hampi is another grand affair that remains etched in your memory forever. Besides their two restaurants, they organize special candle-light dining experiences at their terrace, mantapa overlooking the infinity pool, and the balcony of your room, for an additional charge.

They can also arrange for a floating breakfast in your in-room pool and a daytime meal in the midst of the surrounding forest. All these romantic experiences are specially curated for couples or anyone celebrating special occasions.

Personally, I found the mantapa dinner experience to be the most cherishable, as it was quite a royal setup. Yellow-orange marigold garlands hung from one side of the mantapa, elaborate latticed lanterns were placed on the floor and a bowl of scented roses were arranged on the table.

From here, we could view the infinity pool overlooking the magnanimous palace, which glimmered in golden lights against the darkness of the night. While we waited for our food, a master flutist from the local community presented beautiful melodies of AR Rahman. The combination of his soulful tunes, the cool breeze brushing across our faces and the fairytale-like ambience gave me goosebumps! About the delicacies that followed, I will tell you in the upcoming food section.

evolve back hampi local music experience
Local music experience at Evolve Back Hampi

At the same mantapa, the resort hosts a Bharatanatyam performance every alternate evening. Unfortunately, we missed it as it was raining very heavily on the day the event was scheduled.

Also, it was extremely heartwarming to see how their experienced chefs could customize every meal for me, to cater to my plant-based dietary preferences. I never heard a ‘no’ from them, when I requested for a vegan baker’s basket, pancakes, bhatura and even Sol Kadhi! They made the dairy free probiotic drink, even though they had never attempted it before.

That’s it, my heart was conquered. Plus, they managed to nail the taste of every new vegan dish, which is a rare feat.

TWT Tip: Carry a shawl/jacket with you for the mantapa and terrace dining experience, if you’re not wearing full-sleeved outfits. Because though Hampi is a hot region, it was quite cold and windy during monsoon nights.

# 5. Brilliant & warm staff who can give a masterclass in traditional Indian hospitality

evolve back hampi resort staff

It would be an understatement to say that we were awestruck by their team’s organizing skills. Every activity and event was planned to such perfection, that my husband and I wondered how they managed it.

We deeply admired how front office hospitality executive, Ms. Salma, multitasked between managing guest itineraries, riding a buggy when required and helping guests with their numerous requirements. Front office manager, Mr. Aneesh meticulously helped us plan all our activities and experiences for the 3 days of our stay, which were later executed by Salma sans any glitches.

Apart from the organizing skills, it was humbling to see how each staff member folds their hands to greet every passing guest ‘Namaskara’. This was done by everyone — from the housekeeping staff to buggy assistance executive Ms. Balamma, and the higher level managers like Mr. Bipin Biddappa and Mr. Bablu Singh.

It also felt like the staff is treated and looked after very well, because everyone we spoke to had only nice things to say about the management. During one such conversation, we also learnt that they are all given tours of Hampi after they join and thus, possess a good amount of knowledge about the heritage town.

TWT Tip: The staff is extremely well-trained and respectful towards guests. It will bring a smile on their faces if you can reciprocate their warmth and display some patience in case of any issues.

# 6. Special focus on responsible tourism

evolve back sustainable tourism
Sustainable tourism at Evolve Back Hampi

All the Evolve Back resorts, including the ones in Coorg, Kabini and South Africa, follow sustainable tourism practices. Besides installing solar power plants, windmills and following eco-friendly water harvesting and waste management processes, they have set up some brilliant concepts in place, which completely eliminates the need for plastic bottles or covers.

For instance, every room at Evolve Back Hampi has a drinking water tap that offers RO water. You can simply use their reusable glasses or your water bottle to fill water, without the need to even call for room service. You will also find wooden toothbrushes and combs in the bathrooms.

Additionally, they have bags created by local women out of old newspapers, which are available across the property, just in case you need to carry anything. This further pushes and promotes the message of reuse, recycle and revive.

evolve back hampi souvenir shop

Their in-house souvenir shop also stocks tons of recycled products, including T Shirts, bags and accessories made by the local community. Even the pens placed in the rooms are created with natural fibres by mentally-challenged people, offering enough employment opportunities for the nearby communities. They have also hired several staff members from the local villages at various levels.

Since the resort puts in massive efforts to follow eco-friendly ways, it is advised not to disturb the umpteen birds in the surroundings, and refrain from throwing trash anywhere except the designated dustbins.

TWT Sustainability Trivia: Even in the sightseeing trips, they send a wooden tray filled with glass water bottles in their Gypsy, leaving no scope for purchase of plastic water bottles. The tray comes along with a cloth bag designed specifically to accommodate 1 bottle. This made it easy to carry a bottle during the treks.

The Rooms At Evolve Back Hampi

evolve back hampi rooms
Evolve Back Hampi rooms

All the rooms at Evolve Back Resort Hampi are sprawling suites complete with separate living rooms, bedrooms, bath areas, private balconies and jet pools, with rugged stone flooring and vintage furnishings. The palace resort houses 4 different types of rooms — while the Nivasa, Nilaya, and Zenana are present inside the main palace building, Jal Mahal are a row of separate water villas built in the center of lily ponds.

We stayed at the Zenana and Jal Mahal during our 3-day stay. Here are the details about both these rooms:

Zenana suites:

Tucked away in the farthest corners of the palace, walking towards Zenana suites can make you feel like you’re about to enter a secret room of a fort. A dim-lit corridor leads you into the heavy wooden entrance door with pointed arches. It opens up to a dining area, where an antique table lies in front of us. A variety of fruits and sweets are neatly placed here, while a latticed metal chandelier on top offers a warm glow to the space.

As we turn right to explore the suite further, we go through a narrow wooden door flanked by two antique mashals (ancient torch lamps). The interiors remind you of Sanjay Leela Bhansali film sets. We walk in to find a sprawling living room with a large bay window, which offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding forest and infinity pool below.

Elegant sofas are placed against archways that further lead us into a small jet pool placed right in the center of the suite, followed by the bed room at the end.

The king size bed literally looks like a piece of art created for kings! A regal deep red-colored canopy hovers on the bed in a 3-fold design, adding an archaic charm to the room. Another large bay window with pointed arches lays in front of the bed.

As we continue to explore the room further, we find a complimentary mini bar located under the cabinet, a tray full of snacks such as salted cashews, almonds, a packet of vacuum-fried Ladies Finger Chips, an array of teas and Sidapur coffee, Evolve Back’s own coffee brand — more than enough for sudden hunger pangs and caffeine needs.

On either sides of the jet pool, one door leads to the private balcony with a sofa and arched openings for unobstructed views. The other leads to the bathroom with a luxurious bathtub, partitioned shower area, and two wash basins with distinct brass fittings. Here, you will find eco-friendly toiletries such as wooden toothbrushes, loofahs made of natural fibres, and wooden combs placed inside paper boxes. The shampoos and conditioners are filled inside their metal tumblers. The only piece of plastic I found here was the toothpaste tube.

Jal Mahal:

After a regal two-day stay at the Zenana suite, we moved to the Jal Mahal on the third day. Its massive scale and grandeur make it one of the most luxurious resort experiences in south India.

The Jal Mahal is an ode to the water palace of the Vijayanagara kingdom, which looks absolutely exquisite from the outside itself. The domed villa sits on a mesmerizing lily pond, with elaborate jharokha-style windows adding to its regal charm.

We walk on a stone path built over the pond to enter the magnificent villa. Inside, we are welcomed by a pebbled foyer featuring pretty plants, further extending to the dining space followed by the living area. The hall overlooks a large private pool demarcated by arched bay doors! A chaise lounger is placed here to relax and enjoy the views.

The dining area houses a cozy nook with an array of cushions to settle in comfortably for your meals. While the spacious living room features comfortable sofas in front of a large smart TV. The entire room is lit by their signature mashals on the walls.

Walking further inside the villa, we find the regal bedroom with another cozy nook next to the richly-upholstered bed, featuring their signature deep red canopy on top. Next to the bed lies a textured copper glass and tumbler, with a note on the health benefits of consuming its water as per Ayurveda. Here too, the bed and another chaise lounger overlooks the same outdoor pool with another glass door leading to it.

Moving ahead from the bedroom, you find the gigantic bathroom with a large bathtub on the left, and two elegant black stone wash basins in the center topped by dramatic mirrors. On the right side, an open stone path flanked by bushes leads to an outdoor shower, situated next to another glass-covered shower! This little patio has a third door leading to the outdoor pool.

When we step outside to see the pool, we realize it is set in the midst of another lily pond with fresh blooms. On the right side of the pool, there is a small mantapa with a mini bed where you could have meals or simply sit and relish the incredible view.

While chilling here early in the morning, we spotted something very exciting — a beautiful duck was swimming in our in-room pond! Just when we were about to capture the scene on our camera, he quickly ducked down into the water! 😂

Little moments like these made our stay all the more memorable in the Jal Mahal. Also, this room, of course, had all the amenities and luxuries just like Zenana, but it had a lot more outdoor spaces, adding a natural touch.

Reserve your room at Evolve Back Hampi to experience their royal hospitality.

The Food At Evolve Back Hampi

One of the best aspects about the food at Evolve Back Hampi is that the chefs, Mr. Gopal and Mr. Akash, have revived many lost recipes of India, which feature on their menu. Plus, they also offer a huge variety of continental and traditional Indian cuisines inspired by the Vijayanagara dynasty’s culinary history.

Evolve Back Hampi houses two restaurants, Tuluva and Bahmani (open only for dinner), with the former being the main place where the breakfast buffet and high tea buffet is arranged. Here are the details of all the dishes we savored during our stay:

1. Intimate 4-course meal with lost recipes at Pushkarini Mantapa:

evolve back hampi restaurant
Evolve Back Hampi restaurant

This was a grand meal with many dishes that were unheard of until this point. The menu, printed neatly on a card, consisted of the following:

  • Nargil Shorba – Believed to have originated from the Gandhara empire, the mildly-spiced coconut soup flavored with coriander offered a soft hug of warmth in the windy evening.
  • Tandoori appetizers platter – Placed on a black stone tray, it featured an array of succulent kebabs made with tofu, pineapple, sesame seeds and lentils. They exuded a smoky flavor profile that was bang on. The spiced pineapple tikka was especially interesting, with the interplay of sweet, tangy and spicy notes dancing together on the palate.
  • Dhunder Wale Bharwan Karela – The most interesting dish of this meal, it featured flavorful bitter gourd cups stuffed with a potato and bitter gourd mash, sitting on a bed of rich gravy. Surprisingly, the bitter notes were quite minimal, with the flavors of the gravy overpowering the dish.
  • Matar Ke Nimona Aur Mungadi – A lost recipe from Uttar Pradesh, the hearty and subtly-flavored curry was made with mashed roasted green peas, potatoes and spices.
  • Anjeer Aloo Ki Sabzi – This was a kurma-style gravy made with potatoes and figs, adding a layer of sweetness to the dish.
  • Gahat Ki Dal – The nutrition-packed dal cooked with horsegram was light on the palate and paired beautifully with both Jeera Rice and rotis
  • Dehati Roti & Assorted BreadsDehati, meaning rustic, was a flatbread made with mixed flours like ragi, jowar and bajra. Surprisingly, it was quite soft and melted in the first bite. There were also other varieties of breads like naans and tandoori rotis, which teamed well with the rich curries.
  • Dessert Platter – For desserts, we were served a bowl of Apricot Pudding, Coconut Pudding and 2 varieties of Balushahi, sprinkled with grounded nuts. All of them were made to perfection, but the Balushahi was my favorite — delicately crisp, juicy and exuding hints of powdered cardamom.

Price: INR 10,000 per couple

2. Vijayanagara thali at Tuluva (tribute to north Karnataka’s traditional cuisine):

evolve back hampi kamalapura palace resort food
Evolve Back Hampi Kamalapura Palace resort’s food

Let me start with how appetizing the thali looked, firstly. A bowl of steamed rice was served on a banana leaf along with a vibrant carrot-beans-coconut palya (stir-fry). Three types of local rotis (flatbreads), created with rice, jowar and ragi, were carefully wrapped in a thin sheet of banana leaf. This plate was surrounded by wooden trays in a variety of shapes, which comprised an assortment of chutneys, podis, salads, curries, fries and desserts.

Honestly, each and every dish was delectable and packed with flavors. But my absolute favorites were the Banana Blossoms Palya with grated coconut (had a slightly meaty texture and flavor profile), Enagai (tangy peanut & tomato-based baby eggplant curry), and the Obbattu Rasam (comforting and spiced just right, served along with crisp lentil vadas and fine banana chips). The Moong Dal Payasam made for a delightful sweet ending to the meal.

Price: INR 1450 per person

Note: Both the above set menus can be customized as per your preferences.

3. High tea buffets:

evolve back hampi evening snacks
Evolve Back Hampi – evening snacks

We must have seen several Westernized high tea menus at star hotels, which usually include trays of cakes, mini bakes and puff pastries. While they offer all of that here, it was refreshing to see how Evolve Back goes one step ahead to serve traditional Indian snacks such as Murukku (fried rice-lentil snack), Banana Chips, Pakodas and Bajjis (fritters made of chickpea flour), which have been a part of India’s chai-time for ages. All the items were seasoned perfectly and offered that delicate bite you need with your evening cup of tea.

4. Breakfast buffets:

evolve back hampi restaurant tuluva
Evolve Back Hampi’s restaurant Tuluva

An elaborate affair, the buffet area began with baskets of fresh fruits, including exotic ones like Dragon Fruit and Kiwi. Then, there was a live counter, where a chef was making a variety of dosas, vadas and poori/bhatura. To go with them, there were at least 3 varieties of scrumptious chutneys everyday, even unusual flavors like beetroot and pineapple, besides the usual coconut and tomato.

Two other tables had a spread of Indian and international breakfasts, including paratha, idli, upma, 5 types of breads and a variety of cakes, muffins, croissants, cereals and juices. We could request them to customize a few dishes for us based on our dietary preferences, and every single time, they did a splendid job.

5. Floating breakfast in the in-room pool:

Evolve Back Hampi – floating breakfast

The huge floating tray came in with freshly-made waffles, pancakes, croissants, muffins, sandwiches, fresh fruits, and juices. Genuinely, all the baked goodies were absolutely divine, especially the hot waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar and the fluffy pancakes. We washed it all down with a refreshing coconut water before getting out of the pool.

Our menu was discussed with the chef and customized to be vegan. You can get your tray curated as per your eating preferences.

6. À-la-carte orders at Bahmani/Katha Terrace Dining

On our last day at this luxury resort of Hampi, we went for a candlelight dinner at Katha, the extended terrace area of their second restaurant, Bahmani, which serves Mughal-Nizami cuisine. Here, we ordered Subz Ka Murakat (mixed veg. soup) and Dal-e-Nizami (raw mango dal) with fragrant basmati rice, as we wanted to have something light. Both the soup and dal were soothing for the palate, yet bursting with flavors.
