In the 1880s, when the first railway line was being laid between Mumbai and Pune, the owner of a sweet shop, Mr. Maganlal Aggarwal observed the workers sweating it out under the scorching sun. Moved by their hard work, he concocted a delicious and nutritious snack called Gud Dani, made of ghee, jaggery, and peanuts, to boost their energy.

The innovative snack gained attention from the railway authorities, who supplied it to the workers and offered it to passengers on the trains.
