It looked like a moving canvas painted in various shades of green, as we passed the Karnataka borders and made our way into Wayanad. The plains were replaced by dense coconut-palm groves interspersed with jackfruit trees, tea gardens, and banana plantations.

I pulled down our taxi’s window to inhale the fresh scent of North Kerala and soak in the heavenly scenery. Little did we know that the next 3 days in Wayanad would turn out to be one of our most immersive and culturally-rich travel experiences.

Allow me to take you through our magical journey of Wayanad in this article. We’ll explore some offbeat as well as popular places to visit, local cuisine hotspots, stay options and very important travel tips. Ready to go?

The Best Parts About Our Wayanad Trip

We all know that the whole of Kerala is filled with abundant natural beauty, including Wayanad. So while that was one of the aspects that made our trip thoroughly rejuvenating, let me tell you about what set Wayanad apart.

  1. Wayanad is proud of its local cuisine

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit.webp

I have always had an insane amount of love and admiration for Kerala. But during our trip to Munnar a few years ago, I remember looking for local dishes & being very disappointed. We had not found a single eatery that served the state’s cuisine. Most of them offered only the regular North Indian/continental menu. But Wayanad was a stark contrast.

Here, we found tons of restaurants that proudly celebrated Kerala’s food. Interestingly, most eateries even served a pink-colored warm water called Pathimugham Water along with the meals. On enquiring, I learnt that it’s made from a plant called sappan wood and has several medicinal properties.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

Then for the first time in my life, I discovered that a type of rice also comes from the Bamboo plant, which the tribal community has been cooking for ages. At some of tourist spots, they were selling raw bamboo rice, bamboo rice laddoos and even bamboo rice payasam

Plus, most of the dishes were quite nominally-priced — just like any local and sustainable food should be.

Oh and the variety of local delicacies we ate in Wayanad? Truly divine… I’ll tell you all about them in the upcoming food section. Before that, let’s talk about their eco-conscious lifestyles.

  1. Sustainability is a way of life in Wayanad

There’s so much to say about all the eco-friendly initiatives I saw here. It is a way of life for most of them and not something they suddenly adopted due to climate change. The place truly impressed and inspired me to live a more sustainable life.

Here are all the heartwarming eco practices I found here:

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

  • Even the tender coconut water seller was using paper straws instead of the regular plastic ones.
  • The Kerala tourism department has put a strict limit on the number of tourists who wish to visit eco-sensitive places such as Kuruvadweep and Chembra Peak. These are also plastic-free zones.
  • Bamboo is widely being used by the local communities as a sustainable solution, including boats and bridges in Kuruvadweep river island. They have recognized that it prevents soil erosion, grows fast and has immense potential in construction and creating daily-use objects. There’s also a dedicated bamboo centre in Thrikkaipetta village, where they have an elaborate bamboo nursery, training centre, production unit and workshop. We’ll talk more about this interesting place a little later in the article.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

  • Next, I can never get tired of admiring how the locals grow so many beautiful varieties of trees and plants in their own backyards. I hardly found any house that was not camouflaged by foliage. I mean, respecting and preserving nature’s gifts is one thing, but contributing further to it takes immense work, passion and dedication.
  • Also, I didn’t see any eatery or street food stall using single-use plastic crockery or cutlery, except for water bottles. Either food was being served on banana leaf, steel or paper plates and glass cups.
  1. The unique tribal culture of Wayanad

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit.webp

While tribal history remains forgotten in most places, Wayanad actually has an entire tribal heritage village, which showcases their unique lifestyle and practices. It makes for an unusual experience for tourists who wish to learn about the local culture. I’ll share more about this experience as well shortly.

Brief History Of Wayanad

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

As per an information board at the Wayanad Tea Museum, the place’s history goes back to the stone age. One of the biggest proofs of prehistoric civilization is the Edakkal Caves, where ancient inscriptions on the walls can still be found.

Earlier called Wana Nadu (meaning land of forests), Wayanad has been home to several tribal communities such as Paniyas, Kurchiyas, and Kattunayakans. Some of them worship the Banyan tree, practise farming and are also great at archery.

From the 18th century, Wayanad has been ruled by Vedarkings, Kadamba, Vijayanagar and Kurumbranadu dynasties. Eventually, it fell into the hands of the British, who built roads connecting the virgin lands with the rest of Kerala, Ooty and Mysore. They also set up tea cultivation.

However, the British rule was fought by freedom fighter Pazhassi Raja for a long time until his death in 1805. The current Wayanad district was officially formed in 1980

The Most Amazing Places To Visit In Wayanad

  1. Kuruvadweep Islands

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

I’ll never forget this surreal experience of floating on a bamboo boat atop the Kabini river to alight on a river island.

As we walked inside the calm forest land, we noticed that the sun’s light and heat was hardly reaching us. The dense foliage offered us a soothing shade.

Once in a while, to our pleasant surprise, we heard an elephant’s trumpet from somewhere closeby.

When we reached the end point of the island after a picturesque 15-20 minute walk, a beautiful river bank lay ahead of us.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

We sat quietly for a while with our feet dipped in the clean river water, as the region’s birds treated us to their orchestra.

After spending a refreshing hour, we only got up to return when our stomachs started growling. We remembered that it was already 11 am & we hadn’t eaten breakfast yet.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

TWT Tip: Kuruvadweep only allows 244 tourists per day, as it is an eco-sensitive zone. Hence, if you don’t want to miss it, we highly recommend that you reach here early in the morning and join the queue. The ticket counter only opens at 9 am. But we had reached by 7:30 am and there were already around 10 families before us who had formed the queue. Also, remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry insect repellent and extra clothes (if you want to swim or bathe in the river banks). There’s a changing room at the start and end point. Any plastic is not allowed inside & you will not find food facilities as well until you go back to the ticket counter. Remember to be respectful of nature and act responsibly.

Ticket price: INR 220 for Indians; INR 440 for foreigners; INR 100 for students

  1. En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

I haven’t seen any other place like this over the last 6 years as a frequent traveler across India. Firstly, En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village is set in a place that’s completely surrounded by the rolling hills from 360 degrees, making for stunning views. But what makes it all the more special is how the place acts as a window to the tribal communities of Wayanad, while also offering a platform to them and improving their livelihoods.

As we entered, we found some tribal women selling Bamboo rice payasam — something I had heard and seen for the very first time in my life. After walking further inside, we found tribal stores where they were also selling raw Bamboo rice, rare tribal medicines, dried tapioca, wooden accessories and other products handcrafted by the local tribal communities.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

A short walk later, we came across beautiful models of tribal homes. Built with mud, stone flooring and thatched roofs, they had a rustic charm to them. When we sat down to rest for a while, we realized that the floor was surprisingly cold, despite the hot weather outside.

Some rooms housed tribal museums where their traditional jewelry, daily-use objects and cooking techniques were kept on display. In another room, a tribal man was weaving a bamboo basket live right in front of us. The technique displayed precision and patience.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

Towards the end of the model homes, a group of 3 tribal men were performing a traditional dance of the Paniya tribe called Vattakali. They went in circles while playing a type of drum called Thudi while a flautist added his melodious tunes to their peppy music on his Kuzhal. On some days, they even perform Gadhika, a devotional performance in which men dance dressed up as women.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

While returning back, we found a small eatery where they were serving traditional tribal meals, right in time for lunch. So, we decided to taste the food and it turned out to be incredibly delicious — a jackfruit curry, wild yam & black pea curry, and sambar along with rice and pappadam.

Altogether, the whole experience was so rare and offered us a goldmine of knowledge about their lifestyle.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

Also just in case you thought the tribals must be dressed unusually in their traditional style, that wasn’t the case. They have also evolved and look as normal as any of us.

TWT Tip: We had visited on a holiday (Good Friday) and there was a huge queue with a one hour’s wait time. There were a lot of locals who had come to visit, besides the tourists. If you come across a similar rush during your visit, you can purchase the ticket, register your token number in their book and then check out some nearby places. There are a lot of Gandhigramam stores nearby where you can shop for spices, or quickly visit nearby places like Lakkidi View Point or Wayanad Tea Museum before coming back in time for your visit.

  1. Uravu Bamboo Workshop

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

Uravu Indigenous Science and Technology Study Centre is a hidden place in Wayanad. Most tourists don’t know about its existence, but it’s a must-visit if you seek unique, offbeat experiences. While the organization has been working towards environmental sustainability & improving the livelihoods of local women, you as a visitor can do a bunch of things here.

We had signed up for a tour plus hands-on bamboo craft workshop. The 2-hour session began with an insightful session at their nursery where they were growing 50+ varieties of bamboo plants. We were shown how some varieties even produce rice, some are hollow while others are used for construction.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

Next, we were taken to their manufacturing unit where their artisans were creating a plethora of beautiful products from bamboo. In the next room, they displayed models of bamboo buildings that they have actually created for a few companies in India.

Then, we went to their shop where some of the most stunning bamboo creations were kept for sale. I particularly loved a book-shaped box that opened up to compartments of whole spices — what an innovative and thoughtful gifting option. Then there was another impressive musical instrument that was producing the sound of rain! We decided to buy some bamboo earrings, a bookmark, a packet of bamboo rice, bamboo rice laddoos and bamboo shoot spice powder (podi).

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

At the end, we went to the hands-on workshop where we were taught how to create a bamboo bangle featuring a stunning geometrical design. It took some time to get a hang of it, as the work was quite intricate. But eventually, we were able to finish the creation in about half an hour — a feat we were so proud of!

Altogether, the 2 hours showed us the immense potential of bamboo and how we can incorporate it in our daily lives for a more eco-friendly way of living.

TWT Sustainability Trivia: Bamboo grows faster than most plants, controls soil erosion effectively & even produces rice!

  1. 900 Kandi Glass Bridge

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

This is a stunning glass bridge that overlooks the Chembra Peak, Wayanad’s highest mountain. The views from the glass bridge are surreal.

However, it’s not recommended for everyone. Reaching the glass bridge involves a rough and jolting jeep ride on kucha mountain roads, which lasts for around 40 minutes up & down but feels like eternity.

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

So clearly, people with major back or knee issues must avoid it. However, once we reached the top and walked on the glass bridge, the ride felt worth it. Dense forests were clearly visible beneath our feet and the top of mighty hills lay parallely in front of us.

The ecopark also has several other activities such as ziplining, giant swing, trampoline and children’s park.

  1. Wayanad Tea Museum

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

The Wayanad Tea Museum is a fascinating place to visit if you take special interest in history or tea culture. Set in an old wooden 3-storey building, the museum charts the history of tea production as well as Wayanad through story boards and antique tea machinery.

Some of the most notable things we saw and learnt here were about Wayanad’s tribal history, tea making tools and most surprisingly, cassettes — something that was part of our childhood and has already become a museum piece! At the end, we sipped a variety of teas at their cafe while enjoying the verdant views of the Nilgiris from the windows.

Also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, this place is a haven for animal lovers. While it is very common to see elephants passing by here, the sanctuary is also home to a variety of wildlife including tigers, spotted deer, peacocks and wild boar.

Bordering the Bandipur and Nagarhole reserves on one side and Mudumalai Forest on another end, Muthanga is filled with a massive variety of plant species, which make for a scenic safari ride.

During our visit, an adorable family of elephants were busy munching away on the forest grass. We were also lucky to have spotted a few deers, langurs and rare birds.

Now this is another hidden gem that you won’t find in other Wayanad travel guide on the internet. When we visited, only some locals were present and fortunately, it has not been spoiled by tourist activity yet.

The clear and clean lake was surrounded by lush green meadows and majestic mountains. The lake also had small islands in the centre and gorgeous purple lily flowers near the banks.

Cows and calves were grazing freely on the grasslands. There were two food stalls frying delicious Pazham Pori (sweet banana fritters). Truly, it was a pristine sight to watch and a perfect spot for an undisturbed picnic.

TWT Tip: Some unaware locals have been throwing ice cream sticks and plastic waste here on the clean pastures. As responsible travelers, let’s refrain from spoiling such precious places. Take back your waste to your rooms and dispose of it in a dedicated garbage bin.

  1. Meppadi Tea Estate

Wayanad is filled with verdant tea estates, which you’ll get to see throughout your trip. But what’s the point if you don’t visit one, walk through the greenery and inhale the fresh smell, right?

Meppadi Tea Estate is a quiet and peaceful place we found that was not buzzing with tourists. It was situated close to the road and had several acres of plantations. So we spent some time here during sunset, clicked photographs and then drove towards our homestay.

The highest mountain in Wayanad, Chembra Peak is a trekker’s paradise for its breathtaking vistas and the unusual heart-shaped lake present on the top. On the way, you’ll come across splendid grasslands, dense forests as well as tea plantations.

Ideal Time For Wayanad Trip

We highly recommend visiting Wayanad in the Summer or Winter season. Though monsoons can enhance the natural beauty of Wayanad, it can be risky for traveling and sightseeing.

We had visited during summer and while afternoons were hot, most places in Wayanad are covered with tree shade. This makes it quite pleasant to explore the place.

Winters can be quite cold in Wayanad. Hence, if you’re planning a visit in this season, remember to carry your warmers.

Ways To Reach Wayanad

wayanad-travel-best-places-to-visit

There are different ways to reach Wayanad depending on your city of residence. The nearest railway station, airport and bus stand with good connectivity is present in Kozhikode, which is 2 hours away from Wayanad by road. So this is the most ideal place to reach for travelers from Kerala and south Tamil Nadu, who can then hop on a taxi or bus.

However, if you’re traveling from north Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh or any other states towards the north, your best option would be to reach Mysore and then take a 3-hour drive to Wayanad. You can also take a 5-hour drive from Bangalore, if you reside in or are traveling from this city.
