During my first trip to Pondicherry, I was sure that I wanted to stay at a place that is located in the French Quarters (White Town) and is walkable from the beach. I knew that Pondicherry is best explored on foot or by bicycle.Â
When I looked for boutique properties that fit into my budget, I checked where they were located and found the perfect match.Â
Villa Du Ocean is situated very close to the city center and popular landmarks of Pondicherry — such as Promenade Beach, Notre De Dames Des Anges Church, French War Memorial and also the most popular cafes. It takes just 4 minutes to walk to the beach from the hotel.Â
Taking these factors into consideration, it made complete sense to stay at Villa Du Ocean to make the most of our Pondi trip. Now, allow me to take you through our entire experience at this boutique hotel in Pondicherry, its rooms, food, cleanliness and more. Let’s begin?Â

Best Parts About Our Stay At Villa Du Ocean PondicherryÂ
# The rooftop pool & view
One of the main highlights of Villa Du Ocean is their rooftop pool, from where you can see the overlooking turquoise waters of Bay Of Bengal and the beautiful pink roof of Notre De Dames Des Anges Church. We made sure to spend some time here to relax and soak in the view.Â
# The classic vintage elegance
The entire 3-storey building of Villa Du Ocean dons a classic appeal with bright yellow walls typical of Pondicherry’s White Town. The doors, windows, railings and furniture done in textured wood offer a rustic and old-world charm, reminiscent of the town’s colonial past.Â
# The amazing locationÂ
Among their biggest strengths is the prime location of Villa Du Ocean. Situated on the Romain Rolland Street, the boutique hotel is at a walkable distance from some of the most popular eateries of Pondicherry, including Coromandel Cafe, Bread & Chocolate, and Bay Of Buddha.Â
TWT Tip: You can stroll around the hotel to explore the handicraft boutiques, colonial buildings, and relax at the well-secured Promenade Beach till late in the night before retiring to the hotel.Â
The Room At Villa Du Ocean PondicherryÂ
Villa Du Ocean offers 3 types of rooms spread across three floors. We stayed at the Junior Suite, an inviting and large space with a vintage vibe. Be it the wooden 4-poster bed with carved panels and a mirror on the headboard, or the grandpa chair placed next to it for relaxation, several elements in the room were an ode to traditional south Indian homes.Â
A dark wood work desk and paneled wooden mirror on the wall further added an antique touch.Â
For recreation, the room had a single-seater swing, a television and a tiny balcony, which offered a sneak peek of the ocean waters. Caffeine essentials were also sorted, thanks to the availability of teas, coffees and kettle.Â
The room’s bathroom was a vibrant space with tiles featuring sea blue & white squares juxtaposed to form an abstract pattern on the walls. It also had a bathtub and basic toiletries.Â
The Food At Villa Du Ocean PondicherryÂ
One of the main cons of Villa Du Ocean is that they don’t have a huge variety on their dining menu. The options in the breakfast buffet were also quite limited, with idli, sandwiches, fresh fruits and a few baked goodies.Â
However, it didn’t pose a problem for us, because we already had tons of cafés in Auroville and Pondicherry on our bucket list. Also, whatever they do serve was quite good, though not exceptional. One evening, we ordered Tomato Basil Soup and Crumb-fried Mushrooms and they were spot on.Â

For us, it was the prime location of Villa Du Ocean, the clean vintage rooms, and the rooftop pool overlooking the Bay of Bengal, that made the stay comfortable and memorable.Â
